FASD Education Programs for Children & Youth
Peer-to-Peer Education Program (P-PEP)
Advocacy and Mentorship Whitecrow Village team leaders routinely advocate within the school system on behalf of children, youth and families. Our team leaders are available to help initiate and sustain a dialogue around the school-based needs of a child or youth in which the student, the family, the school and the school community can all offer their perspective and insights. Bringing to the table a background in education complimented by recent experiences with the child or youth succeeding in a supported environment, the Whitecrow Village team leaders can offer creative, success-engendering suggestions as schools, parents, and children work together to develop strategies to effectively support a student. Whitecrow Village team leaders have been sought out by students, parents, teachers, and school districts to advocate in a variety of settings. In addition, students often ask Whitecrow Village team leaders for support in communicating their needs and sharing their perspective and experiences to friends, classmates, and peers. Whitecrow Village team leaders who are affected by FASD often act as mentors, sharing their stories, time and experiences with children and youth and in doing so, modeling the effective communication and life skills that have supported their own success.
Whitecrow Village Panel Presentations (Youth) The internationally acclaimed Whitecrow Village presentation panels for youth can be tailored to inform and address issues specific to a range of topics including:
Panelists are drawn from the Whitecrow Village community (encompassing both FASD affected and not affected staff, adults, youth, children, parents, and community professionals from various domains – including social service, medical, legal, education and other). Speakers share their personal and professional understanding of issues related to FASD and describe the experiences, understanding, and unique learning that they have gained through working together in context of the life-changing Whitecrow Village vision and philosophy. Audience members are invited to engage in discussion and interact with panelists and each other.
Live-In FASD Education (L.I.F.E.) Sessions Children and youth have active mornings (hiking, swimming, canoeing, music, etc.), leading to improved attention and self-regulation. Families spend afternoons together, working on crafts or participating in sport activities. Activities and craft projects introduced early in the session facilitate familiarity and develop confidence in participation. Ample time for demonstration and mentoring is built into our schedule. Sessions build on learning and social connections as tools in developing a sense of belonging and community.
