What’s New at Whitecrow Village?
Our Elders: Harold and Georgina Amos Whitecrow Village is blessed to have the support of two very passionate individuals whose mentorship and guidance embraces many cultures and diverse viewpoints. Our elders offer us leadership, encouragement, reflection, emotional & spiritual guidance, nurturing, and grounding. Harold and Georgina Amos first visited Whitecrow Village in the summer of 2005 as participants in our L.I.F.E. Sessions, and were immediately adopted into our family. A ceremonial acknowledgement of their role as Whitecrow Village elders recently took place in Victoria, British Columbia.
The Whitecrow Village Film Crew has recently been commissioned to produce an update to the video produced by MCFD on adoption and FASD. The original video, “Redefining Success,” was filmed in 1999 – 2000, and features our own Kee Warner, Daniel Warner, Nathan Warner, and Kirk Lutke. The updated sequel, “Success is a Spectrum,” will focus on adults and adolescents with FASD who have been adopted. The new video will showcase various members from the Whitecrow Village community. Initial blueprints, storyboard, and filming have already been completed and final production is well underway.
Pilot Project: Addictions Recovery Community 12-Step Meetings The Whitecrow Village Addictions Support Recovery team has partnered with VIHA: Youth Addictions Services and the FASD Community Circle: Mums Mentoring Mums program to co-facilitate a small pilot 12-step support group that has been meeting in Victoria since early February, 2008. The immediate aim of the team leaders is to work together with FASD affected participants in the group to establish a criteria and format for 12-step addictions recovery support meetings that is mindful of, and respects the needs of persons who are affected by FASD. The goal of this research project is to share findings and learning in a mentorship role with agencies and support communities in other regions. For more information on our Addictions Recovery Support programs, visit the program home page.
Whitecrow Village Family Quilt Project In the summer of 2006, a devoted Whitecrow Village volunteer approached us with the idea to create a community quilt. Her idea was that members of the Whitecrow Village community (including participant families, volunteers, staff, professionals, and other contributors) would share their personal stories and experiences of Whitecrow Village by each designing and decorating the individual squares of the quilt. Over time, and square by square, the blanket will grow into a beautiful symbol of the learning, sharing, support, and caring of our unique community.
