Whitecrow Village has won a grant from the Community Action Initiative (2012-2013)! Our project, titled Living Well, will expand our wonderfully fun and effective Life Skills Workshops in four diverse British Columbia communities. Together, Whitecrow Village facilitators, local youth, and their community leaders will explore obstacles, share strategies, and invite community involvement as youth move through adolescence into adult life. Living Well is built on our belief that youth want to live healthy productive lives and want to contribute to the wellness of their communities. Whitecrow Village Life Skills Workshops have illustrated that youth, including those most marginalised by circumstances such as poverty, family members’ substance misuse, mental illness, involvement in child welfare systems/foster care, can offer many skills and abilities to increase their personal and community wellness. Partners with Whitecrow Village FASD Society in this project include Imagine Campbell River, South Island Distance Education School, the Structured For Success Program, Taku River Tlingit First Nation, and the Gulf Island Film and Television School. Community Action Initiative is a program of the Healthy Minds, Healthy People; The Ten-Year Plan to Address Mental Health and Substance Use in British Columbia. Please Join us for our Boxing Week Fundraising Walk for Whitecrow Pledge walks are being hosted by the Friends of Whitecrow Village in various communities throughout Canada between Dec 26 and Jan 1. For information on how to get involved and/or how to participate in the walk, check out the event page on Facebook or email David Lutke. Pilot Project: Addictions Recovery Community 12-Step Meetings The Whitecrow Village Addictions Support Recovery team has partnered with VIHA: Youth Addictions Services and the FASD Community Circle: Mums Mentoring Mums program to co-facilitate a small pilot 12-step support group that has been meeting in Victoria since early February, 2008. The immediate aim of the team leaders is to work together with FASD affected participants in the group to establish a criteria and format for 12-step addictions recovery support meetings that is mindful of, and respects the needs of persons who are affected by FASD. The goal of this research project is to share findings and learning in a mentorship role with agencies and support communities in other regions. For more information on our Addictions Recovery Support programs, visit the program home page.
Whitecrow Village Family Quilt Project In the summer of 2006, a devoted Whitecrow Village volunteer approached us with the idea to create a community quilt. Her idea was that members of the Whitecrow Village community (including participant families, volunteers, staff, professionals, and other contributors) would share their personal stories and experiences of Whitecrow Village by each designing and decorating the individual squares of the quilt. Over time, and square by square, the blanket will grow into a beautiful symbol of the learning, sharing, support, and caring of our unique community. For information on how you and your family can become involved in this project, click here.
